Self-Initiation is a touchy subject. There are many traditions within Wicca who believe that “only a Witch can make a Witch”. I have personally walked both sides of this debate (in that I have been a self-initiatiate as well as gone through a more traditional degree system in a coven setting) and am not really looking to continue it here.
I share these few links in case there are readers who are considering this step, or who are considering simply doing a re-dedication of sorts to reaffirm their Path. Bear in mind that the most powerful ritual will be written in your own words and come from your own heart.
Back before I joined Lady Rose’s circle and when I was working as a solitary I had the pleasure opportunity to babysit the two young children of a friend in my dorm room. There was very little space and even less for them to do and so the elder child (who if memory serves was about 5) spent a good bit of time looking through all of “my stuff”.
At the time I had a small altar set up on top of my dresser upon which sat a wand I had crafted myself out of a bit of tree branch, a piece of quartx, and some crazy glue. (No insults huh? I was young, poor, and resources were considerably limited). The youngster latched onto it fairly quickly and asked what it was.
Now the mother of said children was a Seventh Day Adventist who was raising her children in that faith. While she knew and accepted what I was I didn’t want to cross any lines when it came to exposing her children to other faith systems and so I simply told him that it was “a crystal on a stick” and “wasn’t it pretty?”
He considered this statement a moment and then very firmly and seriously he stood up, tapped me on the head with my wand and said:
“Zap! You’re a Witch!!”
And yes you could say he was just playing, but the moment was one of such clarity that it transcended that, at least for me. It is in all honesty one of moments that shines the brightest in my memories of being a Witch, and it didn’t even happen within sacred space.

For most solitaries, anything other than self-initiation is pretty much impossible.
That’s a cute story. If only that little boy knew how right he was in saying you were a witch.

I love that story! I had a similar experience. My little friend was around 5 years old as well and when he saw the little witch figure hanging in my kitchen he asked me what it was. Well it was obviously a witch, so I repeated back to him, “Well what is it?” And he said, IT’S YOU! =)
